Ode to Mod

"Mod" has been an abused word in the fashion industry these past few seasons. As a matter of fact I am guilty of using this word a bit too much eversince I think 2-3 years ago(?), giving comments to bf like "oooh, how mod!" to certain items seen in stores or "hmmm... I'm gonna wear something mod today" to myself whilst picking out what to wear. However, I just randomly wondered about what the exact definition of 'mod' really is. Well, I do know what mod looks are comprised of: stark lines, shiny bright materials, pop artsy, 60's vibe... but I just wanted to dig further. To be honest I mostly attribute the word to ensembles with solely black and white elements or to shocking color-blocked shift dresses such as these ones:

Lisa Perry's designs from Styleit.com

which by the way are a bit too 'mod' for my taste. hehe!

Anyhow, I searched online and found the following definitions which might be of interest to you also.

_____________________________________________________________________________________
mod: definition from dict.die.net

style; "tables in modernistic designs"; [syn: modern, modernistic]

n: (British) a British teenager or young adult in the 1960s;

the rockers

mod (mŏd): from answers.com

adj. In or characteristic of this unconventionally modern style. Fashionably up- to-date, especially in style, design, or dress.

in England in the 1960s.

note: [After the Mods, name of several gangs of English youths in the 1960s, short for MODERN.]

Wow. I think it's really interesting how we use a word which refers to something modernistic, unconventional, and up-to-date to refer to something very retro and reminiscent of four decades ago. How ironic! I guess it's my favorite word for this week. haha!

Interesting... thanks for looking it up. I also have the same connotations for this word - retro, bold prints and bright colors. Somehow I know it's related to 'modern' and 'stylish', so now it's confirmed.
